About the Academy
Welcome to the Academy of Dance Arts, Inc. We wish to thank the community for their continuing support and we are happy to have been a part of the lives of the many thousands of young dancers who call ADA their home. The Academy was founded in 1947 by Vinni Frederick and Helen Stanley. Vinni was a Rockette with Radio City Music Hall and Helen danced with George Balanchine and American Ballet Theater.
Vinni served as Director of the Academy for 50 years. Wanda Plemmons has been the Director since 1988 and danced at the Academy as a child. Wanda was honored with an award from UNCSA in 2009, as “Outstanding Teacher in the Performing Arts.” She has served as President of the Alumni for UNCSA and guest choreographer for Disney, Paramount and RJR. Wanda serves on the WS Board for Terpsicorps, a professional dance company. She carries on the tradition established three generations ago at the Academy.
The Academy is proud of it’s accomplished Faculty, many who were former students. Jami Ross Avent, Kim Parrish, and Melissa Pihos were all former scholarship recipients. Debbie Sayles has been on Faculty over 25 years.
ADA served as home for the original Winston-Salem Civic Ballet.
ADA serves as WS rehearsal home for dance company alban elved.
ADA serves as host for Wake Forest in their research on dance and it’s benefits for Parkinson’s Disease.
ADA Faculty, Melissa Pihos will be showing her dance film, “Pihos A Moving Biography in Winston-Salem, Charlotte and New York.
ADA former student, Claire Kretzschmar is currently dancing with New York City Ballet.
ADA former student, Daniel Cooper is currently dancing with Pennsylvania Ballet.
Dance Magazine featured articles on Melissa Pihos in April and former student Elizabeth Martin in February.
ADA has served as the foundation for hundreds of careers in the Arts.
